Napier was the site of a major earthquake (7.8) on February 3, 1931 which destroyed the entire city. The seabed raised up to 8 feet yielding an additional 4000 hectares of land for the city. The city took that opportunity to rebuild, much of it in the art deco style of the 30’s similar to South Beach in Miami. We did drive around a bit of the city, but got few pictures of the buildings. Here is one of the National Tobacco Company.
