Today was our Context Tour to see the Cubist and Art Deco Architecture of Prague.  I figured that I was over my jet lag, but slept for 10 hours, awakening at 10:30.  That pretty much blew our plan to go out and get breakfast and see the Astronomical Clock before the crowds, so after a quick breakfast of coffee and some pastry, we headed out to the Old town square.  It was quite crowded, especially since this was also a big holiday in Prague, St. Wenceslas day.  He was the patron saint of the city, having been an early convert and martyr.  Any how, the clock was under repair and was covered with blue tarps, which someone told us will be off tomorrow.  We’ll plan to return in the morning.  We wandered a little and arrived on time to meet our tour guide Hana and two other couples. The next three hours were spent wandering all over the New City (Staré Město) looking at and wandering around buildings and arcades.  The architecture is beautiful.  In some ways, these buildings were in reaction to the predominant neo-classical architecture of Vienna.  These are a few examples.

After the walk ended, we were tired and really hungry so we stopped at one of the first restaurants we saw, U Pinkasů. Very tasty food.  I got the tripe soup and BJ got the beef broth with liver dumplings and then for a main course, I had baked pork knuckle and BJ had the smoked pork neck with cabbage and potato pancake and of course beer.

Then we headed home, slowly.   On the way we stopped for coffee/chocolate (best hot chocolate ever!) and a pastry.  We got home around dusk and settled in for laundry and reading and writing.  No major plans for tomorrow, so probably early to old town square and then to the castle.

Cubism and Art Deco in Prague — 1 Comment

  1. Ohhh, your photos make me homesick for Prague. I found it so magical. We loved the food also. Glad I went in between being a vegetarian!! We stayed at a B&B around the corner from the clock and the square. It was a nice way to always find our way home. If you haven’t done the bridge at night, it is so romantic. But maybe it’s too cool now. Usually it is as full of artists and musicians as Washington Square used to be in NYC. We were there in August, though.

Gail must be doing fine with DiDi because it is quiet up there. We’ve been taking Django to the forest or to the open space, so I haven’t been up there but once to visit DiDi. But no worries.

When we were in Prague, the first Clinton scandal broke and the Czechs were laughing. Any political conversations, Alan? Are you fluent in Check yet?:)
